Biography: 

Andrea Farran, Academic Director and Programme Advisor of the South Asian Studies minor concentration, is Associate Professor in South Asian Religions and Associate Member in the Department of History and Classical Studies at 黑料网. She first studied South Asian societies as an undergraduate at 黑料网 in the Faculty of Religious Studies (B.A.); then in India (Banaras Hindu University, Adv. Diploma in Hindi) and the United States (M.A., University of Hawai'i at M膩noa, Ph.D., Columbia University). She has taught in India (Antioch College and S.I.T.), and Singapore (National University of Singapore); her research languages are Hindi-Urdu and Sanskrit. Since 2019, Professor Farran serves as the Vice-President and treasurer of CSASA-ACESA (Canadian South Asian Studies Association-Association canadienne d鈥櫭﹖udes sud-asiatiques). Her current SSHRC IDG funded research, "Imperial Infrastructure and Himalayan Pilgrimage in India's 'Land of Gods' (1808-2013)," focuses on religious travel and the history of cartography in late colonial India. In 2023, Professor Farran was the recipient of the Arts Undergraduate Award for 鈥淢ost Outstanding Professor鈥 as well as the Principal's Prize for Excellence in Teaching (Associate Professor).

    Description

    Charts the making of South Asian civilization, 2500 BCE- 1707 CE, through a selection of key themes and major trends. Focus on the transformation of local kinship ties into regional kingdoms and empires, the evolution of religion and the legacy of the expansion of Islam and consequent rise of Turkish, Afghan and Mughal empires in this area.

    Surveys religion in India through key films, assuming no prior knowledge of South Asian cinema. Discussions will focus on issues of religion, visual culture, and representation in the study of Indian film. Thematic focus will vary from year to year, on a range of topics such as nationalism, devotion, secularism, and censorship.

    Explores the history of pilgrimage and emergence of religious tourism in global contexts.     Description

    Ethnography as method informs disciplines from Area Studies and anthropology to linguistics and religious studies. Students will acquire a critical perspective on emic/etic subjectivity in Religious Studies, and a framework to apply ethnography in their research. Coursework covers classic ethnographies, new interventions, and ethnographies of particular relevance for religious traditions in a given year.
